Retail and Shopping Mall Security Vancouver
Private spaces like shopping malls and retail locations are places for petty crime but are also areas where large groups of people can congregate and lead to more serious issues. While these places are patrolled by security personnel, it is important for you to also follow the following steps and be careful with your belongings while in shopping malls. And remember: if you see something, contact a member of security straight away!
Safety in Shopping Malls
- Do not carry a purse or wallet, if possible and never leave a handbag, purse or wallet in a trolley. If you don’t use a bag, keep your wallet or purse in the front pocket of your jacket.
- Recognize when you are rushed, distracted and stressed out, and stay alert to what is going on around you. Thieves can often prey on people who are stressed.
- Avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
- Pay for purchases with credit card when possible.
- Keep cash in your front pocket.
- If you discover that a credit card is missing, notify the credit card company as soon as possible. Don’t assume that you misplaced it and will find it later.
- Keep a record of all of your credit card numbers in a safe place at home.
- Be extra careful if you do carry a wallet or purse. They are the prime targets of criminals in crowded shopping areas, terminals, bus stops, on buses and other rapid transit.
- Avoid carrying too many bags that you forget if you lost a bag or something has been taken.
- Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason. Con-artists may try various methods of distracting you, including working in teams, with the intention of taking your money or belongings.
- Many people have their cell phones at their ear and don’t pay attention to what’s going on around them. Don’t have your cell phone earphones plugged into your ears, so that you can hear and be aware of what’s going on around you.
Safety in Parking Lots
- Never park in dark isolated areas. Rather, in areas that are well-lit and have some populous of other vehicles.
- Take a note (mental or otherwise) of where you parked your vehicle.
- Leave your valuables in your trunk.
- Be sure to have your keys at the ready when returning to your vehicle.
- When returning, be sure to avoid the shadows and walk in the light.
